El Charro Negro

"-Y del Charro Negro, ¿No se sabe alguna leyenda?- se hizo un silencio en el pequeño cuarto donde se encontraba la ofrenda como si los ahí reunidos hicieran memoria, finalmente la hija mayor de Doña Catalina, la dueña de la casa, habló:
-Pues se aparecía por allá por El Pinar, ¿No?- volteó a ver a su madre, quien arrebujada del frío en su rebozo confirmó la información con un movimiento de cabeza- cuando estaban haciendo la carretera, un día él bajó del monte, en su caballo y vestido de negro, y le dijo al ingeniero en jefe: "¿Qué pasó amigo? ¿Que andan haciendo?", este le respondió: "Pues construyendo la carretera". "Bueno" dijo el Charro, "Nada más no pasen de aquí" dijo mientras señalaba un punto en el suelo, "Pero, los planos dicen que ahí va", "Háganle como quieran, pero no pasen de aquí", una vez dicho esto el Charro dio la vuelta a su caballo y se fue. Esto pasó otros dos días, al tercero, el Charro dijo "Bueno, pueden construir aquí siempre y cuando me den tres cargas de almas", ahí fue cuando el ingeniero se dio cuenta de que algo estaba mal y respondió "No, no me puedo comprometer a eso", "Pues ya saben, tres cargas o nada"....Acabaron con la carretera, pero solo atravesó un cachitito de donde el Charro había prohibido..."- nos quedamos unos minutos en silencio viendo al humo del copal elevarse en el aire.
-El Charro Negro es malo- dijo Doña Catalina con la seguridad de quien dice que el cielo está sobre nosotros mientras su mirada se perdía entre los panes y frutas de la ofrenda como viendo momentos perdidos en el tiempo..."

El Charro Negro es todo un personaje aquí en México, en todo el país se cuentan leyendas sobre él, y la mejor definición que he escuchado de él es "Es un cabrón" (tanto en el buen como en el mal sentido); la historia de arriba me la contaron el fin de semana pasado en prácticas...y también de esa práctica es el dibujo, hecho en mi libreta de campo.

"-And, do you know any legend about the Charro Negro?- in the little room where the offer was settled a silence was made, as if everyone were remembering, finally the oldest daughter of Doña Catalina, the owner of the house, spoke:
-Well, he used to appear there, by El Pinar, didn´t he?- she looked to her mother, who was cuddled against the cold in her rebozo, she confirmed the information of her daughter with a nod the head.- When the highway was being builded, he came from the mountain, all dressed in black and riding a black horse,he spoke to the boss engineer: "Hello my friend, what are you doing?", the engineer answered "We´re building the highway". "Well, just don´t cross these line from here" said the Charro pointing the floor, the engineer was surprised: "But...there´s where it must go according to the planes", "Do as you want, but don´t cross the line" after saying that, he turned around his horse and left the place. The same thing happened the following two days, by the third one, the Charro said: "Well, you can build here as long as you give me three loads of souls", in that moment the engineer realised that something was wrong and answered: "Sorry, I can´t compromise myself to do that", "You know, three loads or anything"....The highway was builded finally, but it didn´t cross where the Charro had forbidden.."- we stayed in silence for a few minutes watching the swirls of copal smoke.
-The Charro Negro is evil- said Doña Catalina, sure as when you say that the sky is above us, watching without see the fruits and bread from the offer, probably thinking in moments gone long time away...."

The Charro Negro (Black Charro) is quite a character here in Mexico, there are legends about him all around the country, and the best definition that I´ve heard of him is that "He´s a cabrón"...I can´t find out a good way to translate these word in all its complexity...but it means that he´s very powerful, that he can be an asshole the most of the time or, sometimes, a "nice" guy, more like ambivalent. The little story tht is here was told to me last weekend in a village where I was doing school practices...and the draw is from the same trip, done in my field notebook.
